Arthur Fort Elliott died Sunday, January 3, 2016 at his home in Phenix City, AL.
Arthur was born March 16, 1927 in Columbus, GA to parents Samuel Henry Elliott and Nola Melton Elliott. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. After the war, he worked for Lummus Cotton Gin Co. in Columbus, GA. He acquired the nickname “Joe” while working there. This nickname stayed with him the remainder of his life.
Known as a hard worker and self-starter, he opened Elliott’s Sheetmetal to fulfill government contracts serving hospitals, restaurants, the paper mill and others requesting specialty metal items. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and raising goats and cattle. He had a “gallon-size” passion for ice cream and a penchant for story-telling.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 23 siblings.
Arthur was formerly married to Helen S. Elliott, and they had four children: sons Arthur Fort Elliott, Jr., (Dillie), Michael S. Elliott (Naomi), Samuel H. “Bo Bo” Elliott, and one daughter Jo Anne Elliott Strickland (Charles).
He had 11 Grandchildren: Eric Elliott (Candy), Mary Elliott, Trixie Elliott, Lee Anna Elliott, Steve Elliott (Holly), Lynn Elliott Gaither (David), David Elliott, Ben Elliott (Kimberly), Amy Elliott Enfinger (Ladon), Jill Strickland Frawley (Jason), and Candice Strickland. From these, he was blessed with 20 Great grandchildren, and 1 Great great grandchild.
Family will be receiving visitors on Thursday, January 7 at 11:00 at Striffler and Hamby in Phenix City. The funeral will follow at Noon with burial at Riverdale Cemetery in Columbus.
