Virgie Lee Summy Folger, longtime resident of Kerrville, died on May 26, 2024. She had relocated to Round Rock, Texas in 2018 to be near her sister, Ruth Gray, and her family.
Virgie was born in Edinburg, Texas to Alford Vail Summy and Teressa Faris Summy on September 21, 1933. She was welcomed by her older brother, Alford Faris Summy. Like her brother, she hit the ground running, as she was the daughter of a Texas Cattle Rancher. She learned to ride horses bareback, swim in cow troughs, and eventually graduated from High School at 13, going off to college at Texas State Teachers' college in San Marcos at 16 and moved to Kerrville where she taught for 20 years at Starkey Elementary, in the same classroom, at the same school, all in 5th grade. It was there she reunited with a school mate, Carolee Whalen. Carolee in turn set Virgie up with a friend of her husband, and it was true love. Richards and Virgie were married on August 27, 1955. They celebrated 47 years of marriage before his passing in 2003.
Together they hosted many social events both in their home and at venues around their beloved Texas Hill Country. Richards was active in the Kerrville Jaycees while Virgie served on the Peterson Memorial Library advisory board and volunteered at the Kerrville Humane Society. When they could, they loved to travel to Nantucket or Colorado. They also adopted many family cats which sometimes just found a way to their house. When Virgie retired from teaching, she joined her husband and kept immaculate books for his amusement machine and equipment business. Their nieces and nephews always had a great time playing with his collection when they came for visits. She also enjoyed playing cards, synchronized swimming in the Guadalupe River, having lunch with her lunch bunch (classmates of Richards and friends of theirs) and reading. Many summers she taught swimming and horseback riding at Camp Mystic or danced at Crider’s or River Inn. Virgie was always the gracious host cooking a full meal and desserts at every Thanksgiving, Easter, and any other holiday she could dream up.
Virgie is predeceased by her husband, Richards Folger, her parents, her older brother, and younger sister and cherished brother-in-law, Wendell Gray.
Virgie is survived by her nieces, Janiece (Doug) Nelson and Janet (Tim) Ender both of Hutto; her nephews, Mathew (Misty) Gray of League City and Marc Gray (Jana) of Georgetown. She is also survived by her dear nephews and nieces from the "Folger" side of the family- Tris Folger of Lago Vista, David Folger of Navasota, and Lisa Folger Imhoff of Victoria, and Susan Folger of Georgetown, all who also spent many holidays with our family. She also had many great nieces and nephews and cousins.
The family would like to thank University Village Assisted Living and Valerian Home Health Care and Hospice for their loving care for the past 7 years. No public service is planned.
