Robert Michael Tate, known affectionately as Mike, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2024, in Austin, Texas. Born on May 21, 1963, in Baltimore, Maryland, Mike was the beloved son of James Robert Tate and Gloria Ann Lawrence.
Mike's early years were spent in the Baltimore area until the passing of his mother in 1975. Following this, his father relocated the family to Beckley, West Virginia, where Mike and his siblings were raised. He attended Independence High School in Coal City, West Virginia, and graduated with a diploma that marked the beginning of his journey into adulthood. Mike briefly attended Marshall University before returning home to care for his father during a time of
declining health.
In his professional life, Mike dedicated 36 years to Abbott Laboratories, which later became Hospira and ultimately Pfizer. His commitment to his work was evident as he navigated through transitions in the industry, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and hard work.
Mike met the love of his life, Lai Jean Eng Tate, while both were employed at Abbott Laboratories. They married on December 27, 1991, and together they raised two daughters, Hope Elise Tate Word and Jaime Erin Tate. Mike took immense pride in being a father and enjoyed creating lasting memories with his family.
An avid sports fan, Mike spent countless hours cheering for his favorite teams, the Washington Redskins and the Baltimore Orioles. Known for his humor, sweetness, and determination, he had a unique ability to bring joy to those around him. His positive spirit and unwavering support for his loved ones will be deeply missed.
Mike is survived by his loving wife, Lai Jean, and his daughters, Hope and her husband Devin Word, and Jaime. He was preceded in death by his mother, Gloria Ann, and father, James Robert.
Mike’s memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 5th, at 10:00 AM, at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville, TX. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Mike's name.
He will forever be remembered for his love, laughter, and the legacy of kindness he leaves behind.
