A long-time resident of San Antonio, Texas, Opal I. Drake departed peacefully on December 28, 2022, in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 97.
She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Watson, two grandsons, James Watson and his wife, Micki, and Bradley Watson and his wife, Kayla, grand-daughter-in-law, Molly Watson, and six great-grandchildren (Connor Watson, Tyler Watson, Kalie Watson, Chase Watson, Clay Watson, and Brynna Watson.) Opal was preceded in passing by her husband, James “Jimmie” Drake, and her eldest grandson, William Watson III.
Opal was born in Burlington, Wisconsin on March 18, 1925, to Herbert Zick and Dorothy Coor. As a young lady, she and her mother moved to San Antonio where she met her beloved husband, Jimmie. They soon married in Dalhart, Texas prior to his departure as a WWII pilot. Upon returning from his military service, Jimmie and Opal settled in Austin, Texas.
She spent most of her married life as a homemaker, but after her husband’s death, she worked at the Texas Insurance Checking Office. Upon her retirement, Opal moved to San Antonio, where many of their friends resided.
At the age of 92, Opal decided to be confirmed into the Catholic religion, where she gained precious church friends. St. Pius X of San Antonio has been her most rewarding association. In addition to her faith, Opal loved traveling and accrued approximately 27 cruises to various destinations. She also loved playing cards, especially bridge and poker.
At Opal’s request, the family will have a private graveside funeral service at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, and in Opal’s memory, donations may be made to either St. Pius X Catholic Church, 3303 Urban Crest Dr., San Antonio, Texas 78209 or to Animal Defense League of Texas, 11300 Nacogdoches Rd., San Antonio, Texas 78217.
