Leonard Lincoln Hall, 91, of Austin, Texas, passed away on July 20, 2021. Leonard was a native Texan born on February 12, 1930, in Delaware Bend, Texas, to Leonard Oliver and Ida Bell (Matthews) Hall. Leonard grew up with his siblings in a small community along the Red River in north Texas, and at a young age he acquired the nickname of "Pistol" which family and friends fondly called him throughout his life. While growing up, he helped his dad and brothers pick cotton in north Texas. He had many fond memories of his growing up days near Illinois Bend and St. Jo, Texas. Leonard graduated with the 1950 class of Whitesboro High School. He was proud of that accomplishment and spoke of it often. He knew education and hard work would help him make a living. He always told his children to make good grades in school, and get those lessons done.
Leonard will be remembered as a good provider who loved and cared for his family. He retired after 25 years working for the Austin American Statesman. As a teenager, working at the local newspaper in Whiteboro, Texas, he would spend countless hours through the night teaching himself to repair and run linotype and press machines so the paper could be ready to go out in the early dawn hours. For him, working at a newspaper was gratifying, and he was able to support his family by taking employment at newspapers in Whitesboro, Corsicana, Tyler, and then the Austin American Statesman.
Leonard’s favorite hobbies were vegetable gardening and raising chickens. He relished the outdoors when he could be a part of it. He was raised a country boy which instilled in him an interest in hunting and fishing. He always had dogs, especially the Muggins. He was an avid football fan who enjoyed viewing televised UT and Dallas football games with his sons, and watching a competitive football game at the Hall house was quite an experience. He never forgot a Valentine’s Day and made sure his wife and daughters were remembered with a heart of candy every February 14th. If the family needed anything, he was always the one ready to make a sacrifice to get it. When the grandchildren came along, he had fun holding and playing with them. He watched as they grew, and he looked on proudly with a smile because he knew they were his. He was a quiet and a good man.
Leonard was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 29 years, Wanda Fay (Stanley) Hall of Gainesville, Texas; son, Leonard Lincoln Hall, Jr. "Bud"; brothers, Charlie Joe Hall and Billy Ray Hall; sister, Doris Hurley; and his dear friend and companion for many years, Virginia McAngus.
