She was born on December 25, 1929, in rural Hays County, Texas. Katie was a Christmas gift from above.
Katie was a proud graduate of the original L. C. Anderson High School, in 1948. After high school, Katie had a variety of jobs eventually accepting a career opportunity with the U. S. Postal Service. She was a dedicated employee for over thirty years. It is reported that she never took a sick day from work.
She met her soulmate, Buster Hancock, and they were married January 24, 1966. They were married for 35 years. Buster preceded her in death. They had no children.
Katie was a faithful and active member of Ebenezer Third Baptist Church. She was always well dressed for church services and could be recognized at church by the beautiful hats she wore to complement her stylish outfits. Katie cherished the many friends and memories she made while participating in Missionary Circle #2 (Hanah Circle) and the Adult Women’s Sunday School Class Number 1. These members became her extended family.
Katie was also an active member of Zeta “Amicae” (Friends of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated). She held the offices of treasure and chaplain.
Katie is survived by family and friends.
A celebration of Katie’s life will be held at Ebenezer Third Baptist Church, 1010 East 10th Street, Austin, Texas 78702, at 11:00AM on Saturday, November 4, 2023.
