Joyce Ann Lock Mott

Joyce started playing the piano with a unique precociousness at the age of four. She began playing for worship services at her home church at age 12. When she was accepted to Baylor University’s School of Music as a Piano Performance major, she was quickly recognized for her outstanding talent as a concert pianist and accompanist. Joyce was established as the first accompanist to the Baylor Religious Hour Choir in 1947 with Dick Baker as director. She acted as accompanist to crusades in the late 1940s and early 1950s, including the “Youth for Christ” movement with young evangelists like Billy Graham, Howard Butt, and Bruce McIver.

Joyce was the principal accompanist for the Southern Baptist Convention’s state and national gatherings throughout her career. She was also the select accompanist for Baritone John McKay of the James Robison Crusade Ministry. Over her lifetime, she published various sacred choral works and composed many sacred solos and piano solos.

Most notably, Mrs. Mott was the primary pianist and accompanist for Hyde Park Baptist Church in Austin, Texas for 45 faithful years. Joyce was beloved as a constant fixture in the choir room and piano loft. She was a wise mentor, patient accompanist, loyal friend, and warm light of strength and dignity. Her gentle voice and quiet laugh displayed a joy that came from her faith in Jesus.

“Moyce’s” grandchildren remember her clickety-clacking nails and the jingle jangle of her stacks of bracelets as she led worship out of the overflow of her heart. They fondly remember sleepovers at her house, beautiful holiday gatherings, and her wonderful themed teddy bear tea parties.

Mrs. Mott is survived by her daughters and their spouses, Becky and Jim Lozier and Jamye and Stephen Carrell; daughter-in-law, Jana Mott Marsden; eight grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.

Joyce is preceded in death by James C. Mott, her husband of 58 years; James Stanley Mott, their son; James Royal and Bessie Lock, her parents; Lucy Elena Lozier, her great-granddaughter; and his son-in-law Joe Marsden.
