James J. Peacock passed away on Wednesday, November 24, 2021 while resting and gazing out the window at his home in Cedar Park, Texas with his caretaker by his side. He joined his wife Leona to celebrate Thanksgiving together in heaven. He was 93.
Jim was born in Washington, D.C. in April of 1928 to parents Agnes and Bernard Peacock. He grew up in the Anacostia neighborhood of Washington, D.C. with his loving parents and his older brother, Bernard. He graduated from Catholic University (Washington, DC) with a dual degree in math and physics. He then pursued a career with Gulf Oil Company as a geophysicist, which took him to many places, the most important one being a research laboratory in Harmarville, PA where he met his wife, Leona Ritter Peacock (deceased). They were married in May of 1952 and remained married for 58 years until Leona's passing in 2010.
Jim served in the military in Korea in the Army Corps of Engineers from 1951 to 1955 where he received three service medals, National Defense Service, United Nations Service, and Korean Service. His highest rank was First Lieutenant. Although he did not speak of combat, he would often reminisce about his time in Korea while watching the TV show M*A*S*H with his family.
During his life, Jim had many hobbies, which included woodworking, refinishing steamer trunks (some of his children still have the ones he did for them), amateur dog show handler, sculpture and paintings of many different mediums. He was always looking forward to his next project.
Jim was a loving father to his five children - Marian Shaw (husband Cliff), Frances Ratty (husband Mike), Paula Peacock, James C. Peacock (wife Olivia) and Justin Peacock (wife Sheila). He had six grandchildren and one great-grandson. Adrienne Ratty Bush and Brian Ratty (mother Frances), Elizabeth Lehew (mother Olivia Peacock) and MacKenna Peacock (Father James C.) and Connor and Gavin Peacock (father Justin). Jim had recently met his great-grandson, John Ratty Bush (mother Adrienne) just days before his passing.
