Gary was born on October 24, 1952 in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey to Bill Powell and Marilou (Williams) Powell. He traveled and lived with his parents in El Paso, Texas, Washington D.C., Fort Devens, Mass., Darmstadt, Frankfurt, and Augsburg Germany, and Sagamihara, Japan. He was a high school graduate of Augsburg American High School and attended Texas Tech. He was a good student excelling in math. He was an exceptional baseball and football player for his high schools. While in high school, he had his own band in which he was guitarist and played gigs in Frankfurt, Germany. He was employed in Management for Grocery Retail for many years. Gary was a hardworking, honest and dedicated son, husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to so many. His passion was bridge and he attained the rank of diamond life master. He was also a brilliant chess player. Gary was a unique individual; he can be forever remembered for his love of family, as an avid bridge player, his smile, sense of humor, and relaxed nature. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Gary married Marcia Harris on November 17, 1981.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by a step-daughter; Melissa Cook and her husband Russ and their children Riley and Kace of Georgetown; brother Marc Powell and wife Karen of Georgetown and their son Daniel of Boston, Ma, and their daughter Katie and her husband Cody Sears of Pflugerville; and brother John Powell and his wife Julie and their four sons, Jackson, Jordan, Joshua, and P.J. of Round Rock as well as many extended family members and close friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his sister Gaye Tenoso.
A Celebration of Gary’s life will be conducted from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 11, at his parents’ home: 1505 St. Williams Loop in Round Rock.
