Aubrey Jean Hughes, who was called “AJ” by everyone, was born in Lometa, Texas on August 31, 1926 to Aubrey and Minnie McLean. She completed her journey on earth December 16th. Her family moved to Georgetown, Texas when she was a small child. She attended the Georgetown schools and Southwestern University. There she met and married Charles Partlow, and in 1948 they moved to Austin. They had three children. Charlie was a car dealer and owned Charlie Partlow Rambler. When their oldest daughter started kindergarten, Charlie asked AJ to come “answer the phone” and help around the dealership. After his untimely death, AJ ran the car dealership, being one of very few women to own and operate a car franchise in America at that time. A few years after Charlie’s death, she married Huber Hughes. They moved to Wichita, Kansas and started Hughes Georgetown Manor, an Ethan Allen furniture gallery. AJ was always a very independent business woman who found plenty of time for her family. She was a very devoted mother to her beloved son “Spook”.
After Huber’s death, AJ moved back to Austin to be with her family. She spent the last 13 years at Brookdale Lakeway where she had numerous friends. She was one of the “Three Musketeers” along with her table mates Jan and Nina. She considered many of the “care associates” there to be her extended family. The family would like to thank all of those associates for the kindness and love they showed to AJ., most especially, Julie Wilson, the Brookdale hospice nurse, Lucero Leon, Fabien Weeder, Stacey Johns and Brandon Valdivia.
AJ is survived by her daughter Paula Kuperman, and her husband David, her step daughter Alene Don Carlos and her husband, Steve, and their sons. Her grandchildren Michael Rhodes, Corby Rhodes and his wife, Sonja, and her great-grandchild, Courtney Rhodes. She is preceeded in death by her husband Charles Partlow, daughter Leigh Partlow, son Dwain “Spook” Partlow, husband Huber Hughes and son in law David Rhodes.
A private family graveside service will be held with a memorial to follow at a later date. Those wishing to do so may make a donation in AJ’s honor to Marbridge Foundation, Dwain “Spook” Partlow Special Olympics Scholarship Fund, P. O. Box 2250, Manchaca, Texas 78652 or to a charity of one’s choice.
