Reverend Adrian Chishimba, a Catholic priest of the Diocese of Austin, died on July 15 in Round Rock, Texas, at the age of 49. He was born on August 15, 1973, in Chilubula Mission, in the Kasama District, Zambia, to Mathews Kapotwe Mwenya and Astridah Mutunwa Chishimba. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mumbi Astridah Mwenya, and is survived by Mathews Mwenya, Hellen Chisala Mwenya, Mulenga Francis, Josephine Mubanga Mwenya, Austin Kapotwe Mwenya, Gabriel Kasonde Mweya, Theresa Mwenya, and Emmanuel Kaseketi Mwenya.
His journey to the priesthood began with the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate in 1996 when he entered the Pre-Noviate of the Zambia Oblate Delegation. He earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy in 1999 from the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome, Italy, a Master of Arts in theology in 2008, and a Master of Divinity in Theology in 2011, both from the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, Texas.
Rev. Chishimba was ordained to the priesthood on May 29, 2010. He served several parishes in the diocese, including St. John Neumann in Austin (2010-2014), St. Patrick in Hutto (2014-2018), St. Mary Cathedral in Austin (2019-2020), St. Vincent de Paul in Austin (2020-2021), and St. Joseph in Bryan (2021-2022).
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 24, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. at St. John Neumann Parish in Austin, followed by the Vigil with Prayer of the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 25, 2023 at St. John Neumann Parish in Austin. The Rite of Committal and burial will take place later in Zambia with Fr. Adrian’s family.
