With great sadness, we announce the passing of Muriel Frances Flavelle (nèe Fish) at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, in Toronto, on July 14. She was 94.
Predeceased by her husbands, John Stuart Flavelle and Ernest Hamilton Smith, and her sister Doris Ann Ryan, of El Paso, Texas, she will be deeply missed by her children Dana (Bill) and Doug (Brenda) and four grandchildren Stewart (Alexis), Grace, Genevieve and Olivia.
Born in Trois-Rivières, QC., to Joseph Arthur Fish and Daisy Helene (née Cunningham), she graduated from McGill University (Macdonald College) in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics and a lifelong passion for cooking. She worked as a dietitian at Eaton’s landmark 9th floor restaurant in downtown Montreal until her marriage to John in 1952.Their life together involved summers at family cottages, on Sturgeon Lake and the Ottawa River, skiing, travel to far flung places, and laughter. They lived in Peterborough and Pembroke, On.
An avid reader, she belonged to the University Women’s Club and volunteered with several community organizations. But her true love was the piano, which she played well into her 80s. She obtained her ARCT (teaching certificate) from the Royal Conservatory of Music in 1976 and was involved in the Kiwanis Music Festival and Concerts At Home. Elegant and sophisticated, she was known for her gentle manner, quick wit and infectious laugh.
