Of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada entered into her eternal life at Mount St. Joseph, Peterborough ON, on December 23, 2021. Mary Theresia was born in 1928, near Browning Saskatchewan. She was the daughter of the late Henry Ludwig and his wife Catherine Fornwald and was the oldest of thirteen children. Mary entered the Sisters of St. Joseph Community in Peterborough in 1948 and received the religious name of Sister Mary Imelda.
She is survived by her brother John, and sisters, Sister Elizabeth Ludwig CSJ, Lorraine (Tom) Tardi, Cathy (Armand) Hoffart, Christine Diemert, Anne Welch, Josephine (Doug) Pettigrew, sister-in-law Faye Ludwig.
She is predeceased by her brothers Albert (Ivy), and Jerome, and sisters Edna (Roland) Deland, Sister Gertrude Ludwig CSJ, Elsie (Pat) Madden, and brother-in-law John Diemert.
She is lovingly remembered and will be missed by the members of her CSJ religious community, her family and many nieces and nephews.
Sister began her ministry at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Peterborough, as a Registered Laboratory Technologist. She was then asked to move into the ministry of education and taught in Wainwright AB, and Clandonald AB as well as in Peterborough ON and Lindsay ON. In 1965 Sister responded to the call to work in the mission in Itacoatiara, Brazil. At the hospital in Itacoatiara Sister set up a laboratory and blood bank as well as taught local women to do the routine tests and blood bank work. Sister worked with health posts in the interior and with several small communities. She achieved her aim of preparing Brazilian staff to carry on her work.
Upon her return to Canada in 1976 Sister Mary resumed teaching in Wainright AB and taught Special Education classes. Later she joined the Edmonton Archdiocesan Catechetical Team as a consultant tor the Vegreville Deanery for fifteen years, serving rural areas and the R.C.I.A. team. In 2004 Sister Mary moved to Edmonton AB and assisted in community and pastoral services and the Associate program.
Sister Mary was called back to Peterborough in 2007 where she served the congregation as General Treasurer until 2011. When she retired, she remained involved in volunteer committees and activities at Mount St. Joseph. Sister Mary will be remembered as a woman of many talents, great commitment, and love of playing cards.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday December 28th at 10:00 a.m. at Mount St. Joseph Chapel. This will be followed by interment at Highland Park Cemetery, Peterborough. As expressions of sympathy Donations in memory of Sister Mary Ludwig can be made at www.csjcanada.org Donate
