When our children were in elementary school, they met our neighbour Laurence daily.  He and his dog, named “Dog” sauntered along the sidewalk; Laurence with his hands clasped characteristically behind his back, and “Dog” walking unleased, two paces behind.  Our kids, Cameron and Linnea thought the name of “Dog” so funny!  They chatted with Laurence about their daily life and he always took the time to listen and make them feel like they mattered.  His calm manner, lyrical soft spoken Irish accent, and intense gaze encouraged them to share with him whatever was on their minds.

Years later, our son started to struggle with a serious mental health issue as a teen.  Laurence gave support to Cam and to us; he was always willing to listen and offer encouragement.  When our son died suddenly and unexpectantly in July 2022, Laurence asked to attend our family service to honour Cameron.  We will never forget his kindness.

A few months later, I met Laurence out for a walk.  He recognized my sadness and grief that day, still trying to cope with the loss of our son.  As a means of comfort, he recited a poem for me.  He said that he had found this poem just after his mother passed away and it had comforted him greatly.  I too was deeply touched by this poem.  Days later, we met once again on the street and I asked Laurence if he would allow me to record his recitation of the poem.  He willingly agreed.  I have listened to it often. We will so miss our sidewalk chats with Laurence on Hopkins Avenue.  We will forever feel blessed to have met him.

I worked with Laurence at Chimo many years ago. He was quite the character with many his stories (none of them sharing details about his life, much to our dismay), riddles and unique ways to pass time. His easy going nature and even demeanor was a stark contrast to those moments of stubbornness. He was a good shift partner and I had hoped his years in retirement treated him well.

Our deepest sympathies to Laurence’s  family.  Thinking of you all at this time.

My wife Elsbeth and I travelled many a mile with Lawrence in the Trent university conservation trails with our Goldens, Rufus and Barney. We discussed many topics. Lawrence was well read, articulate and his stories were sprinkled with lively wit. He walked with his four-legged friend Tucker who belonged to a friend who lived a considerable distance away, but Lawrence was a devoted and loyal friend to both four-legged and two legged friends. Tucker in turn was devoted to Lawrence. We remember watching Tucker and Lawrence crossing University Road with Tucker at heel; no leash, just Lawrence’s gentle request was all that was required. Lawrence will be greatly missed by all the people he touched both through his work and his leisure time. Our sympathy to his family and friends. Lawrence, Ireland welcomes you home.
