Joy passed away peacefully with her daughters at her side at Canterbury Gardens Retirement Centre, Peterborough on October 21, 2021, at the age of 97. She was predeceased in 2012 by her beloved husband Roy Edwards and in 1973 by her loving daughter Rachael. She will be sadly missed by her daughters Diana King (Stephen) and Sylvia Carnovale (Vince). She will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Jessica Dunk, Michael Dunk (Chantel), Trevor King (Brittany) and Brian King (Helen) and by her great-grandchildren Kylie and Jordan. She is predeceased by her parents Bertie and Ethel Sanders and two brothers Harold and Ken and their wives, all of Fareham, England. She will be sadly missed by her nieces, nephew and their families and friends in England.
Joy was born and raised in the south of England. She was the youngest of 3 siblings and was an advocate for her older brother who was born deaf. Through Joy her brother was able to experience a hearing world. Several years after marrying Roy they emigrated to Canada with 3 young children in 1958. They first lived in Belleville, Ontario then Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and finally settling in Peterborough in 1964 when Trent University first opened. Over the years Joy developed many wonderful friendships.
Joy will be fondly remembered by friends and family. She was known for her “green thumb” and passion for flowering plants and gardening. She was also an accomplished homemaker and hosted many functions for Trent University dignitaries and the academic community.
Joy devoted many hours of her time volunteering both at her children’s schools and in the community. She was also first mate to Roy as they spent many years sailing together - first in a 14-foot wooden dingy and later in a 23-foot sailboat. They would spend part of their summers navigating the Trent waterways and Georgian Bay. After Roy’s retirement, they enjoyed spending summers together and with family at their cottage, exploring other countries by cruise ship and taking biannual trips to England to see their families. For the past 10 years Mum has resided in Canterbury Gardens Retirement Home. A special thanks to the staff at Canterbury Gardens for the excellent care they provided during the years Joy lived there.
Though the private family funeral service is by invitation only, friends are invited to view the service by livestream at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 through the Comstock-Kaye website. Interment to follow at the Highland Park Cemetery, Peterborough.
In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Alzheimer’s Society or the Bob Rumball Candian Centre of Excellence for the Deaf would be greatly appreciated. Online condolences may be made at www.comstockkaye.com
