Jim Hickey, or Hick, was one of the first members of the Philadelphia Wings I met after Captain Carm, Wayne Platt and John Grant came down from Peterborough and from the minute I met him all I can every remember about him was his laugh and his giggling.


Uncle Sy always would say after a trip, that Hick, he just can't stop giggling.

Back in 74 Captain Carm got this big new Cadillac. A red one. He had this old Ford LTD and like so many things Cap did for many of the Boys of Summer, he gave the car to Hick. And Hick drove it around like it was something so, so special. 

There was this one time where Hick was with Wass, Carm, John, Sy, Little Lloyder and I at Glassmans Deli, not far from the office at the Marriott on City Line Avenue. Of course Captain Carm was telling us all stories of his weekend exploits, and Wass was making faces. John Grant was talking about changes. Lots and lots of changes and there was Hick putting mustard on his baked beans, and Uncle Sy, saying oh, Hick, you're gonna make me trow up' as only Uncle Sy could say.

But there was one thing that those two years I'll always remember most of all about Jimmy Hickey. He was always there for every one of the Wings. When we needed someone to go to some player appearance there was Hick. When someone needed to talk to the media, Hick would smirk, and then say something glib. Hick had heart and soul. Even in 74 when an injury cut short his season, Hick was around the team, offering encouragement and advice. 

Jimmy Hickey was also one of the best face-off men ever to play the game. Well, now he's facing off with God, as he makes his way to join other fallen brothers of the Boy's of Summer. Somewhere up there, Jack Bionda's drafting him again, Spitzer's getting ready to pass the ball, and Uncle Sy's writing the press release announcing his arrival.
