Helen Ruthe Smith

January 4, 1924 – August 18, 2023

Ruthe passed away peacefully on August 18, 2023 at the PRHC at the age of 99.

She was born in Brighton, Ont to Maude and Oscar Morgan. She moved to Peterborough when she married Lorne (d. 2016). They were married 67 years. She was the cherished Mother to Cheryl (Lawry) Shand of Vancouver, Karen Laybourn of Vancouver and Scott Smith of Peterborough. Loving grandmother to 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Ruthe was a member of Trinity United Church for 65 years. She volunteered for many years at the church rummage sales, the YMCA rummage sales and the Peterborough Civic Hospital. She was an avid tennis player, downhill skier and bridge player. She enjoyed many happy summers at their cottage at Presqu’ile Point. Her favourite pastime was “SHOPPING”.

She will be missed by all who loved and knew her! Many thanks to the nursing staff at Princess Gardens and PRHC for their care and compassion. Ruthe and Lorne’s children and their families wish to offer their sincere thanks to Helen Drury, a much loved friend of the Smith family for sixty years. Helen’s remarkable and unfailing kindness to Ruthe and Lorne, most particularly during their golden years will never be forgotten by anyone in the extended family.

Cremation has taken place as per Ruthe’s wishes. A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, August 21st, 2023 at 2:00 pm at COMSTOCK-KAYE Life Celebration Centre, 356 Rubidge Street, Peterborough.
