DEYO, Dr. Gerald M. – A rewarding life came to an end on May 3, 2016 at Extendicare Kawartha Lakes. Gerry had multiple degenerative illnesses in the last years of his life. Family and friends visited and provided comfort during his last days.
Gerry was born March 26, 1928 in Kingston. He grew up in Windsor and the east end of Toronto, finishing high school at Riverdale Collegiate. He received a BA from McMaster University in 1950. His medical degree was achieved at the University of Toronto in 1954. The Obstetrics award he won in his final year lead to an offer to specialize. Instead, he chose general practice a choice he never regretted. Following his internship, he and his wife moved to South Porcupine in Northern Ontario. That was an exciting time for him; it was an ‘around the clock’ office practice, traveling by bush plane to remote communities and being the physician for the Dome Gold Mines. In 1960, he decided to pursue the radiology program at Queen’s University. After a year, the family moved to his wife Barbara’s hometown of Peterborough. Gerry had a thriving general practice until his retirement in 1994. Medicine remained a central focus of his interest even after retirement.
A lifelong interest in gardening was shared with Barbara. Toward the end of his career he learned to cross country ski and bought a bicycle. He and his daughter Kathleen shared many hours of bike rides around Peterborough County and especially along River Road. She cherishes her memories of those rides and their few trips to Europe to ski or cycle. His daughter Suzanne enjoyed her father’s visits to Ottawa and their walks when she was living there.
Following retirement, he took up sewing and made many sweatshirts for family members. His granddaughters were delighted with Grandpa Gerry’s handiwork.
Gerry is survived by daughters Kathleen (Bruce) and Suzanne, granddaughters Liz and Emily, sister Mary, brother Gord (Alfie) and friends Maureen and Lorne. He was pre-deceased by his wife Barbara in 2008, his son-in-law Walter Kennedy in 2015 and his parents Dorothy and Harold.
Burial will be private. Friends, patients and colleagues may visit with the family at a public reception on Monday, May 9, 2016 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at COMSTOCK FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE, 356 Rubidge Street, Peterborough, Ontario, 705-745-4683. If so desired, donations in memory of Gerry may be made to Doctors Without Borders or a Charity of Choice. Online condolences may be made at www.comstockfuneralhome.com
