MASON, Elizabeth (nee Doherty) – With heavy hearts we say goodbye to our wife and mother who passed peacefully at home, surrounded by her family on August 23, 2021. Loving wife of 67 years to Norman. The most amazing mother to Elaine and Paul. Predeceased by her parents Michael and Maude Doherty (nee Williams). Dear sister of Anna Peddle (Richard), Thomas Doherty (predeceased by Mary), Seamus Doherty (Isabel), Michael Doherty (Anne Marie), Rosaleen Flynn (Anthony) and the late Margaret Davidson (the late Jim). Elizabeth will be fondly remembered by her extended family and friends here in Canada, the United States, Ireland and the UK.
Norman and Elizabeth met at the movies in Belfast when they were in their early teens and it was love at first sight. Norman immigrated to Canada in early 1953, followed by his sweetheart Elizabeth later that same year. Soon after they married, they started their family with the arrival of Elaine in 1955 and Paul in 1959. They settled in Peterborough in 1979 after living in Toronto and Montreal. Being married for 67 years is quite a milestone, but funny how the years have passed so quickly.
Elizabeth was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease when she was 62 and developed dementia a few years later. Although both of these diseases impacted Elizabeth greatly, it never stopped her selfless love and passion to make people laugh. Humour is such a great medicine.
Elizabeth was the person people gravitated towards in a crowded room. She was the person who others would call upon for advice or to be cheered up. She was the person who would tell things as they were, and if she was your friend, she was likely your best friend.
Mom, you are the kindest, most loving and generous human being God ever created. We will miss everything about you, including your quick wit and heart of gold. You are, and will remain to be, our guiding light. Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Donald Spink and the staff at Fairhaven, Dr. Mark Guttman, Dr. Neil Hudson, Dr. Lauren Morelli and the Saint Elizabeth nursing staff. Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held in Elizabeth’s honour, and our family will celebrate Elizabeth’s wonderful life at a later date. If so desired, donations in memory of Elizabeth may be made to Parkinson Canada, Lakefield Animal Welfare Society or a charity of choice. Online condolences can be made at www.comstockkaye.com
