MARTELL, Roy Douglas ‘Doug’ – It is with a heavy heart that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martell, in his 94th year, on November 23, 2021 at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre. Beloved husband of Mary (nee Rudd) for 63 years. Loving dad of John (Elizabeth), Scott (Yaowaluck), and Robert (Shawn). Proud grandpa of Doug, Angela, Nick, Ploy, Pete, Daniel, Aimee, Brett, and Taylor, and great-grandfather of Jeremy, Brayden, Sebastian, Katelynn, Alexis, and Everett.
He was was born in Glace Bay, Cape Breton in 1928. As a young man, he worked overseas for nearly a decade. Upon his return to Canada, he met Mary, they fell deeply in love, got married, and began a family. After years of study, he passed his exams and became a civil engineer, all the while working full-time. Doug was always an ardent and discerning collector of everything, from books, to rocks, art, music, stamps – and frankly anything you can imagine. Possessing a keen and logical mind, he and Mary had countless spontaneous adventures off the beaten track, from sunset to sunset, mountain range to mountain range, and sea to sea; exploring all this world has to offer, with sights few have witnessed. Throughout all of their adventures, he recorded the world with an expert’s eye resulting in many exceptional photographs that lovingly adorn their home.
He cast a long shadow and will continue to be an inspiration to his family and everyone that he met. He will forever be in all our hearts and thoughts.
Heartfelt thanks to the Peterborough Regional Health Centre nurses, doctors, and staff (especially those on Floor 2B) for their exceptional care and kindness. A private family service will take place at a later time. Online condolences may be made at www.comstockkaye.com.
