George H. Bartley, passed away, August 14, 2012, at Kingston Residence of Perrysburg on Tuesday. He was born on September 14, 1919 in Tempe, Arizona. His parents were Harry Bartley and Ida (Beck) Bartley. As a child, his family moved to Monroe County, Michigan.
He had a distinguished military career serving in four theaters of World War II: Algeria, French Morocco, Sicily, and the D-Day Invasion of France in the Ninth Division. He was also a Prisoner-of War and was awarded the Purple Heart.
He married Simonne Yvonne Vandaele on September 22, 1941. They were happily married for 69 years.
Beloved of family, he is survived by his daughter, Laurie Thompson; granddaughters, Julie (Mike) Gagle, Lisa (Mike) Cardinal, Denise (Jeff) Taylor and Leila (Mike) Mongan. Also survived by great-grandchildren; Danielle Thompson, Katherine Mongan, Aubrianna (Bree) Gagle, Brandon Gagle, Autumn Cardinal and April Cardinal. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Simonne; two infant sons; daughter, Linda McArthur; and siblings, Ella Dietzel, Leona Mahas, and John Bartley.
Friends will be received Friday, August 17, 2012 from 3-8 P.M. at Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, 222 E. South Boundary Street, Perrysburg (419-874-3133). Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 18, 2012 at 10:30 A.M. at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 13101 Five Point Road, Perrysburg, with Pastor John Rutz officiating. Burial will follow in Fort Meigs Union Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wood County Office of Aging.
