He was born April 7, 1946 to the late William S. and Viola Heffernan at the Naval Dispensary, Miami Beach, FL. Bill moved to Pensacola in August, 2021 from Miami, FL where he was a retired Police Sergeant for the City of Miami Police Department. Among the many assignments during his career, he is most remembered for the time he spent as part of the K-9, Motor, and Special Investigation units.
Bill attended Miami Senior High School and was a member of the 1962 State and National Championship football team. Bill proudly served in the United States Navy as part of the Underwater Demolition Teams during the Vietnam war era. He enjoyed travel, riding motorcycles, and Miami Hurricane football. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years Lois M. Heffernan, of Pensacola, FL and sons William C. Heffernan of Miami, FL, William B. Heffernan Jr. of Pensacola, FL, Marshall Gilreath Jr (Angela) of Pensacola, FL., his 4 grandchildren Cory Gilreath, Shelby Gilreath, Shaynequa Gilreath, Samantha Becker (Drew), great grandson Beau Becker, and nephews James(Djenepha) Hall and Clifford Hall.
A graveside service for William will be held Tuesday, July 5, 2022 from 2:00 PM to 2:30 PM at Barrancas National Cemetery, 1 Cemetery Road, Pensacola, FL 32508.
