Roy Earl Thames, 70, passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2017. He was a long-time resident of Pensacola, FL before moving to Valdosta, GA. He was preceded in death by his parents Alice (Boswell) Thames and Alvin Thames; three brothers, Bobby Thames, William (Buster) Thames and Waelstine (Buddy) Thames. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Thames, two stepdaughters, Danielle Kohlieber, Stephanie Kohlieber and stepson, Austin Kohlieber from Valdosta, GA. He is also survived by three daughters, Lisa (Greg) Griffis of Pace, Florida, Melanie (Greg) Scott of Lynn Haven, Florida and Wendy (Darin) Stairs of Spring Hill, Tennessee and their mother Hermine Thames-Barel; numerous grandchildren including Megan Griffis, Cameron Griffis, Connor Scott, Collin Scott, Hailey Stairs, Brittany Stairs, Ashlyn Stairs and Chloe Jackson; three brothers: Jerry (Marsha) of Leesberg of Florida, Sherman (Debbie) of Pensacola and Carl Thames of Pensacola, along with many special nieces and nephews.
Roy was a Mason with the Ensley Masonic Lodge and a Shriner with the Hadji Temple of Pensacola, Florida. He also loved fishing and his Florida State Seminoles football "GO NOLES!"
He was on the drum line at Pensacola High School and graduated from Pensacola Adult High School. After graduating, he served during the Vietnam era and was later employed as an electroplater at NAS Pensacola before transferring to Moody Air Force Base and retiring from Civil Service.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family on Sunday, April 30, 2017 from 2:00-3:00 pm. at Eastern Gate Memorial Funeral Home, on Nine Mile Road in Pensacola, FL, with a service immediately following. There will be a procession on Monday, May 1, 2017 from Eastern Gate Memorial Funeral Home to Barrancas National Cemetery, departing the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. He will be laid to rest at Barrancas at 11:00 a.m. Serving as pallbearers will be Mr. Thames’ sons-in-law, Gregory Griffis, Greg Scott and Darin Stairs. Honorary pallbearers include Cameron Griffis, Connor Scott and Austin Kohlieber.
The family would like to thank the VA Medical Center in Lake City, Florida , Units CLC3 and Serenity Place for their professional care over the past 1 ½ years. In Lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made to Alzheimer's Research.
