CTRC Plen Adkins, 78, of Pensacola, died Tuesday, July 31, 2012.
Chief Adkins joined the U. S. Navy in February 1953 and retired in 1973 after twenty years of service. In 1958 he was on the USS Nautilus when she broke the ice at the North Pole (The first vessel to complete a submerged transit beneath the North Pole). He has resided in Pensacola since 1970, where he was stationed at Corryfield as an instructor. In the late 1980’s through the early 1990’s he worked as a CW Operator at WLO Mobile Marine Radio in Mobile, Alabama. He enjoyed going to the IP Casino and the 32 Club in Biloxi. Chief Adkins loved fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Gilbert Adkins and Ethel Adkins; two brothers, Dee and Max and one sister.
Survivors include one sister; one niece, Gwen Adkins Denson of Falls Church, VA; one nephew, Gilbert Adkins of Orlando, FL; two great nephews, Jeffrey C. Denson of Berkley, CA and Stephen Adkins of Orlando, FL; and one great niece, Kristin Adkins Sigle of Orlando; three great great nephews and two great great nieces.
Graveside services will be held at 9:30 a.m., Friday, August 03, 2012 at Barrancas National Cemetery with full military honors.
