Mildred L. Gill

Mildred ‘Millie’ Louise Gill passed away peacefully at home on November 26, 2016. Her parents, Louis and Emilie Michalcik, had emigrated from Czechoslovakia in the early 1920’s. She was born August 4, 1925 in Trenton, NJ. Millie graduated from Trenton High School in 1943 and Mercer Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. She became a Registered Nurse in 1947. She was to meet her soon to be husband on a blind date. They were married December 6, 1947 in Trenton, NJ.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 66 years Robert Ledman Gill, her parents Louis and Emilie Michalcik, her younger sister Georgiana Dorozinsky, and her daughter Karen Gill Kelsey.

Millie is survived by son Robert L. Gill, Jr. and wife Annette of Charlotte, NC; daughter Barbara Gill Brown and husband Robert of Pensacola, FL.; Grandchildren: Michele Mack Thompson and husband Kevin of Charlotte, NC; Cynthia Mack of Charlotte, NC; Joseph A. Gill of Asheville, NC; Ryan Gibson of Pensacola, FL; Great-grandchildren: Micah Mack Voelzow and Stella Thompson of Charlotte, NC; Zane Gibson of Pensacola, FL, and many beloved relatives in America, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.

Millie continued to work as a pediatric care nurse after marriage and even after the birth of her son Robert in 1948. While her husband was stationed at sea, she lived with her parents in Trenton and continued to work as a nurse. In later years, she joined her husband at stateside duty stations in Portsmouth, NH; Philadelphia, PA; Bethesda, MD; Washington, DC; Jacksonville, FL; and Pensacola, FL. She managed the home and family while he served our country.

In Pensacola, she was a member of the Oleander Garden Club, the Jester's, Avant Garde, the Stardusters and the Retired Officer's Wives Club. Mom enjoyed travelling, cooking, gardening, flower arranging, and especially spending time with her children, grandchildren & great grandchildren. She was proud of her Czech heritage & baked the special Christmas cookies for many years. Mom was so excited to be in contact with her Czech relatives by social media. She remarked that her parents would be amazed by the technology.

She will be remembered as a loving mother and wife. The family wishes to extend thanks to the staff that cared for her at Naval Hospital Pensacola, Specialty Center, West Florida Hospital, Granny Nannies, and Covenant Care of Pensacola.

A visitation will be held Friday, December 2, 2016 from 9:00 am to 10:00 am with a funeral service at 10:00 am at Oak Lawn Funeral Home Chapel. An interment will follow at 11:00 am at Barrancas National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks to consider donations to Covenant Care of Pensacola or your favorite charity. Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
