John Stroade Shay, Sr., 87 passed away March 8, 2022 at Homestead Village, Pensacola, Florida. He was born in Bellefonte, PA. a son of Margaret Thelma (Scandrol) Shay and John E. Shay. He attended primary School in Milesburg, PA. and graduated from Bellefonte High School in 1952. After high school he joined the US Navy and retired as a senior Aerographers Mate (weather forecaster) in November, 1981. During his service he took his family to exotic places such as Morocco, Japan and Hawaii, plus many stateside assignments.
In May 1955 he married Dorothy Louise (Ream) Shay(deceased). They had a son, John Stroade Shay, Jr.(deceased). They have two living grandsons, Michael(Florida) and Christopher(Maryland).
After retirement from the Navy he used his GI Bill Benefits and earned a Bachelors and Masters degrees from Troy State University. He also worked as a Federal Civil Service employee in the Defense and Accounting System.
He was a 4th degree Knight of Columbus and a Lector and Eucharistic Minister at his Parish Church, St. Anne's, Bellview. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Assoc., and American Legion Post 240.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and son, and brothers Oscar and Dennis. Surviving are brothers Fred of Bellefonte and John E. of Moshanon. Also surviving are Great Grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday March 16, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at Barrancas National Cemetery Road, Pensacola Florida, 32508. Please arrive at Oak Lawn Funeral Home for the police escorted procession by 12:30 PM.
