John served in the Navy during World War II. Upon discharge; he started what would be his life long career in road construction. It was this job that led to him meeting the love of his life while working in Elizabeth City North Carolina. He had a bet with a co-worker that she would say yes. John and Gladys would have celebrated 73 years of marriage on July 3rd. This was by his own admission his “greatest” accomplishment. John was also a 32nd degree Mason. He retired from Ed Chadbourne Inc, only to go back to work for Heaton Brothers where he worked until the age of 80.
He is preceded in death by his mother Lucy “Mawmaw” Epps, his father Wofford “Pawpaw” Epps; four sisters, Louise, Vincille, Bertie Lou “Blondie”; and Elsie; and two brothers, James, Freddie Lee.
John is survived by his wife, Gladys Epps; daughter, Tina Peka; grandson, Cameron Griggers; granddaughter, Andrea Griggers ; great granddaughters, Breana, Madison, Genesis; great grandson, Isaiah; brother-in-law, Norman Riddick; and nieces, nephews, many in-laws and close friends.
Visitation will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, July 7, 2020 at Pensacola Baptist Temple. Funeral service will begin at 11:30 am. Interment will immediately follow at Barrancas National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Covenant Hospice or Pensacola Baptist Temple.
