Retired Army Master Sergeant Jack Boyd Hatten died at his home in Lillian, Alabama on March 8, 2013, at the age of 83. He enlisted in the Army at the age of 17 and served with the Occupation Forces in Japan and Germany. His major military occupation was as a cartographer and cartographic instructor and after retiring from the military he was employed by Neel-Schaffer Engineering Firm. He was a member of VFW Post 3036 in Hattiesburg and a life member of the Masonic Lodge. He was born in Sumrall, Mississippi on March 13, 1929 and is preceded in death by his parents Vance Ray and Mary Ellen Hatten; a son, Vance LeeRoy Hatten; brother, Robert Hatten; and sister, Frances Hull. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years; Gretchen Williams Hatten; daughter, Renee Mendola (Michael McClain); granddaughter, Sofya Leras (James) of Boston, MA; and 2 great grandchildren. A memorial service with full military honors will be held at Oak Lawn Funeral Home on Monday, March 11, 2013 at 1pm, followed by a lunch reception hosted by the family at the funeral home. Inurnment at Barrancas National Cemetery will take place at a later date.
