(1933-2022)
Harold “Sonny” Morris passed away on April 23, 2022, with his family by his side. He was born on December 28, 1933, to Henry A. Morris and Thelma Hilton Morris in Pensacola FL. Harold attended public schools in Escambia County, graduating from Pensacola High in 1951. He attended Pensacola Junior College before volunteering for military. Harold served in the Army during the Korean War as well as the Army Reserves.
Harold married the love of his life Barbara Nichols on August 11, 1956. He continued college at the University of Southern Mississippi, graduating in 1958. He returned home to teach math at Escambia High School the first year it opened.
Harold also worked for Gulf Power Company and Reichhold Chemical Company in their computer technology departments. He later opened the Hilltop Package Store and remodeled to add a lounge and gathering place known as the Hard Hat Room for the “regulars”. The Hilltop was a friendly neighborhood lounge that became well-known for its annual fish fry and golf charity fundraisers.
Harold loved country music (especially visiting The Grand Ol’ Opry), sports car racing (a highlight was driving himself on the track at Talledega). He was active in the Pensacola community as a member of the Pensacola Jaycees (serving as president in 1970), Pensacola Masonic Lodge, Hadji Shriners, Pensacola Elks Lodge, and a charter member of the Pensacola Moose Lodge.
Harold is predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife Barbara and his daughters Lynn Erickson (David), Ann Morris-Webb (Mark) and Bonnie Morris; grandchildren Kristen Sappington (Kenny), Jonathan Fish (Alina), Zak Morris-Webb (Megan), Asa Morris-Webb and Izabella Erickson; and great grandchildren Allie, Kade, Tori, Greyson, Maddex, Callan, Evelyn, Leo and Naomi. He also is survived by his sister Dolores Seals, brother Aubrey Morris (Charlotte), numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Harold was loved by all and will be greatly missed.
Pallbearers are Mark Webb, Zak Morris-Webb, Asa Morris-Webb, Jonathan Fish, Billy Spear and Scott Spear. Honorary pallbearers are James J. Reeves, Clark Thompson, Aubrey Morris, Cavanaugh Nichols, Garner Nichols and Gary Green.
A Visitation for Harold will be held Thursday, April 28, 2022 from 9:00am to 10:00am at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, with funeral service to follow from 10:00am to 10:45am. A graveside service will immediately follow from 11:00am to 11:30am at Barrancas National Cemetery.
