She was born on April 4, 1932 on a farm outside of Georgiana, AL, to Nettie and George Parker. She grew up a tomboy and loved following her father to the fields or playing with her brother in the creek.
She attended Georgiana High School and continued her education at Troy University where she met her future husband, James Gorum. She earned a Bachelor Degree in Education at Troy and later earned a Masters Degree in Education from Mississippi College. She was a teacher for many years in schools in Alabama and Florida. She last taught at Washington High School in Pensacola.
She loved her family fiercely and no one messed with Betty. She was feisty and said exactly what she was thinking. She loved getting together at family reunions all across the country: Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, the Smoky Mountains but especially Pensacola Beach.
She made friends and built a community wherever she went from the permanent section of the River Valley Campground in Cherokee, NC to her last residence at Homestead Village. She loved flowers and the grounds around her apartment at Homestead were a showplace.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Nettie and George Parker; her siblings Norman, Dean, Wilma and Dewey “Top”; and her husband James Lewis Gorum.
Betty is survived by her sister Susie Scofield and her spouse Ansely; sons and their spouses George and Lisa Gorum, Jonathan and Vonette Gorum and Jeffrey and Linda Gorum; five grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
At her request, no service will be held.
