Ellsworth was born on December 26, 1922, in Mansfield, PA, the son Ralph & Edith (Keltz) Schoonover. He married Marie (Horton) Schoonover on January 3, 1942. He was a veteran of the United States Army, who served in World War II, including service in California, Virginia, Wales, England, France, Belgium, and Luxembourg. He survived the Invasion of Normandy, received many honors, and he was honorably discharged in 1945.Ellsworth prided himself on raising his six children with Marie, and he worked various jobs, including carpentry, truck driving, and driving bus for Dundee Central School District, before retiring to Florida. He was a founder of the Himrod Fire Department, served as Chief, helped to build the new location for the fire department, and he served as the Chlorinator for the Himrod Water System. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, woodworking, participating in church activities, playing the organ, and gardening. Ellsworth is survived by 5 children; Philip (Connie) Schoonover, of The Villages, FL; Mary Perry of Penn Yan; Rose (Daniel) Woodard, of West Seneca, NY; JoAnne (Bronlee) Combs of Flowery Branch, GA; Bette Smolos of Cape Canaveral, FL; 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. He is pre-deceased by his parents, his wife Marie, 2 brothers, 1 sister, and his son, Roger (Lori Wilson) Schoonover.
Family & friends may call on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 starting at 1:00 pm at the Townsend-Wood Funeral Chapel, 201 E. Elm St., Penn Yan, NY. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home at 2:00 pm. The burial will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Penn Yan Manor Nursing Home, 655 N. Liberty St., Penn Yan, NY 14527, or to a charity of one’s choice.
