Ruth Elaine Mccombs (née Fleming), affectionately known as Waynie, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2024, in Vincent, Alabama, at the age of 81. Born on June 14, 1943, in Vincent, Alabama, she was a beacon of joy and kindness in her community.
Ruth graduated from Woodlawn High School in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1961. Her career was as diverse as it was fulfilling. She began working as a secretary in the 1960s, later owning and operating a wedding catering business, a florist shop and a macrame shop in Vincent during the 70s and 80s. Her and James’ imaginations shone brightly through their creations of Post Critters, where she produced painted crafts.
As a member of Vincent First Baptist Church, Ruth actively participated and sometimes led the youth program there. She and James also spent time at Wilsonville Baptist Church. She was devout in her faith and in her work guiding youth and especially young women, towards the teachings of Christ. In her later years, she enjoyed the streamcasts from Spoke Word Ministries.
Ruth's hobbies included traveling, especially to visit her sisters, and painting on various mediums—from canvases to crafts and even cakes… using icing. She also relished the occasional jaunt to the casino, bringing laughter and light-heartedness to those around her. However, her favorite hobby was being utterly devoted to her grand, and great grandchildren. Spoiling takes time and effort.
Ruth was a cherished member of her family, survived by her children Kevin Harper-Mccombs, Renee Mccombs Abernathy, and Stella Mccombs Moore; ten grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; sister Sue Zareski Burns; and brother Vichael Fleming. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of nearly 63 years, James Mccombs, her sister Gwendolyn Faye Roberts, and her parents Edna and James Fleming.
Services will be held at Kilgroe Funeral Home in Pell City, Alabama, on July 29. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM followed by the service at 11:00 AM. Ruth will be laid to rest in Macedonia Cemetery. Her warmth and humor will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
