Mitchell, Kathryn Smith (Kacky), died Saturday, October 05, 2024. Born in Birmingham, Alabama 1929. She graduated from Ramsey H.S., Ward-Belmont Junior College in Nashville, Tenn, and Birmingham-Southern College with a degree in Biology. She interned at Birmingham Baptist Hospitals, earning the M.T. A.S.C.P. certificate, as a laboratory technologist. She retired from U.A.B. in 1990, after 11 years at Russell Ambulatory Center. She was an interested and involved person in all things ‘animal, vegetable and mineral.’ She belonged to Kappa Delta Sorority, B’ham Audubon, Hummingbird Society, Ala. Wildlife Center and many environmental organizations. She was a founding member of the Alabama Arabian Horse Assoc., president and show chairman for the regional event at the Montgomery Coliseum. She raised and showed Arabian horses, her happiest event being the completion of a 50-mile endurance ride in the Georgia mountains. Volunteer work included Love Pantry, the Needlework Ministry, flower and altar guild at St. Simon Peter Church in Pell City. Also, a Member of the Pell City Pens writing group. Hobbies included painting and drawing, bird watching, gardening, reading, current events.
She is survived by her brother, H. Ralph Smith (Martha) of Culpeper, VA, nieces and daughter-in-law, Mary H. Mitchell of Pell City, Ala. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. H. Ralph Smith and Mary Kathryn Willingham Smith of Birmingham, and her two beloved sons, F.R. (Rick) Mitchell and Mathew (Matt) C. Mitchell.
A memorial service will be at 11:00 am Saturday, October 19, 2024 at St. Simon Peter Episcopal Church in Pell City, AL.
