Don served his country as a member of the United States Navy from 1969-1974, where he was stationed in Spain and served as military police. He married the love of his life, Dianne Edwards Garrett, in 1971 and the two spent time together in Spain while he was in the service.
Don worked at Baptist Princeton as Assistant Director of Engineering for many years. However, many recognize Don for his 26 years of service in the community as owner of Garrett Pool and Supply. More than any other role in his life, it is well known that his first love was the ministry of singing and traveling proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ through his gospel singing group, Southern Harmony. He grew up in church, where his love for singing grew and was encouraged by his parents and ultimately supported by his family. Don started the Lord’s work in music ministry in the late 1970’s and continued to travel the United States for over 40 years. Over the years, Don had a huge impact on numerous members of Southern Harmony and made life-long friendships.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Dianne Garrett, daughter Dana Garrett Lewis (Brian), four grandchildren – Jackson, Canaan, Alex and Lanie, and 2 great-grandchildren, sisters Edna Bramen and Zona Delee. Don is preceded in death by his parents, Ada Violet and Walter Montgomery Garrett, brothers David and Ray Garrett, and son Joseph Dean Garrett.
Services will be held at Kilgore Funeral Home in Pell City with family receiving visitors on Thursday April 28, 2022 between 6-8pm and funeral service on Friday, April 29, 2022 at 2pm.
