Robert "Bobby" Thacker

Robert “Bobby” Asa Thacker, age 74, of Shelby County, passed away on December 8, 2020. He was born to Jock and Martha Thacker on August 12, 1946, in Birmingham, AL. He attended Shades Valley High School and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama in 1968, where he was President of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Bobby continued to receive his Doctor of Dental Medicine from The University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1971 and became a Board-Certified Orthodontist. This was one of his proudest achievements. He was incredibly, and justifiably proud of being driven and self-sufficient enough to support his dreams. He was raised in a household with little financial support, but still achieved great things as an Orthodontist, husband, and father. Bobby found his calling serving others as an Orthodontist in the community, and as a dentist in the Air Force, and later The Leadership Council for the UAB School of Dentistry. He served others without request or desire for compensation, it was what drove him.

Aviation was a huge part of Bobby’s life because he was introduced to aviation at a young age by his father. He received his private pilots license at age 17 and went on to accumulate additional ratings. He helped pay his way through dental school as a flight instructor. His love of aviation continued for the rest of his life. Bobby took every opportunity to take to the skies. When he was not working as an orthodontist or flying, he enjoyed his family, entertaining, and working in his yard. Bobby had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel to unusual destinations with his family-he made his own path. He enjoyed all outdoor sports. He enjoyed water skiing, snow skiing, scuba diving, and boating. Bobby fulfilled his duty to his patients and remained dedicated to spending his free time with friends and family. His friends and family can attest to his willingness to help any individual in need. He would stop at nothing to ensure people he cared about were taken care of whether friend, family, employee, or colleague. Many can attest to using his guidance and assistance on many occasions, and his loved ones will no longer have this privilege.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Russel Thacker (Jock) and Martha Powell Thacker and his brother, Caldwell Thacker.

Bobby is survived by his wife of 36 years, Jamie Mosely Thacker; his children, Jock Michael Thacker, Robert Durham Thacker, Brian Burnett Thacker and Jodi Thacker Rogers and his brother, John Russell Thacker (Dawn.)

Visitation will be Saturday, December 12, 2020 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, followed by a memorial service at Southern Heritage Funeral Home. Due to COVID-19 guidelines, masks will be required.
