John was born on November 23, 1938 in Youngstown, Ohio. He was a graduate of Youngstown State University and the ROTC program, achieving the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army. He worked at Eaton, Yale and Towne in Batavia, NY, and Columbus Equipment Company in Ohio for over 25 years, and he was president of Alpha Home Health Care in Cary, NC.
He married Joy Miller on June 16, 1962. He leaves his wife Joy Miller Mellon and his children David Mellon of Birmingham, AL and Jennifer Keffeler of Peoria, IL along with daughter-in-law Pam (Sockwell) Mellon and son-in-law Jason Keffeler. He also leaves four grandchildren: Harper, John A. (II), Lilly and Katherine Mellon.
John followed his father, Roy Mellon, in his interest and membership in the Lions Club and other philanthropic service. He was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and remained close to his fraternity brothers. John was beloved by his family and friends. He was admired by all who knew him for his gentle spirit and kind heart.
A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday October 29, 2014 at Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church, 5080 Cahaba Valley Trace, Birmingham, AL 35242. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. followed by a Memorial Service at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts to The Center for Palliative and Supportive Care at UAB Hospital c/o Megann Bates Cain, 1808 Seventh Avenue South, BDB-465, Birmingham, AL, 35294-0012. Alternatively, memorial gifts can be made to the American Cancer Society.
