John Jesse Krahn, age 91 of Birmingham, AL passed away on Sunday, June 3, 2018. John loved his family more than life. He was a wonderful father, brother, husband, grandfather and friend. He worked for the Bell System for 27 years. Born and raised in Fairfield, ID, John grew up on a farm with six brothers and one sister. His father and mother were first generation immigrants from Germany. John met Georgia, the love of his life at Gooding High School and married her shortly after Georgia graduated from high school. John served in the Marines during WWII in the Mariana Islands. He went to college for 5 years and received two Masters degrees in Engineering (one of the first to study ergonomic engineering). He lived in many locations including: Pocatello, ID; Logan, UT; Stillwater, OK; Lubbock, TX; Tulsa, OK; Danville, IN; Idaho Falls, ID; Kansas City, MO; Portland OR; Burlington, NC;
Alabaster, AL; Pharr, TX and Birmingham, AL. John loved music. He enjoyed singing and sang in the choir and quartets in church. He also played several instruments including the piano, trumpet and harmonica. John and Georgia were avid square dancers for over 30 years. John and Georgia loved travelling across the country taking his daughters and eventually their grandkids on many special trips. He was an active member of North Shelby Baptist Church in Birmingham. John was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Doty Krahn, a son, Greg Allen, a daughter, Yvonne Schmitt and his parents, William Frederick Krahn and Christine Peterson, his brother, William ‘Bill’ Krahn and his sister Matha Ann Irwin. John is survived by; a daughter, Sue Falls; grandchildren, Jennifer Schmitt, Jonathan Schmitt
(Amanda) and Jacob Falls; four brothers, Chris (Gloria), Milt (Jean), Mort (Loah) and Larry (Cookie), step-brother, Douglas; three great-grandchildren, Gilbert, Caleb and Abby Schmitt and a host of nieces, and nephews. Services will be held on Thursday, June 7th at Southern Heritage Funeral Home, 457 Cahaba Road, Pelham, AL 35124 at 11AM with visitation one
hour prior to the service. Interment will be at 2PM at the Alabama National Cemetery, Montevallo, AL. The family wishes to thank Bette Swann, St. Vincent’s Hospice and Brent Fluker for their love and care of John. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to North Shelby Baptist Church, 4100 Belcher Drive, Birmingham, AL 35242.
