James “Carl" Butts, age 78, of Birmingham, Alabama went peacefully to his heavenly home on July 24, 2024. He was affectionately known as Pappy to all his family and friends. Pappy’s greatest joy in life was his family. He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Mildred Butts of Cullman and his in-laws Joe and Jane Burkett of Townley. He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Linda Jo Burkett Butts, known as Gabby; two beloved sons and daughter-in-loves, Kyle Butts (Nicole) and Ryan Butts (Destiny) of Birmingham; four adored grandchildren Molly and Luke Butts, Burkley and Foster Butts, who will forever cherish the memories of his love, wisdom and unwavering support. He also is survived by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law David and Brenda Edgil of Townley; two nieces Kasey (Jeff) Maddox and Kayla (Chris) Goetz; great nieces Paisleanne and Breely Jane Maddox and great nephews Rohan and Walter Goetz, of Jasper.
Carl was in ROTC and graduated from the University of Alabama in 1969 with a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduating, he served in the United States Army as a Lieutenant stationed in Korea. Following his military service he was an engineer for BellSouth until his retirement.
Pappy was Gabby’s partner, her rock, confidant and her best friend. Pappy will be deeply missed but his legacy of love, kindness and his love for the Lord will live on in the hearts of those fortunate enough to know him.
Visitation will be Sunday, July 28, 2024 beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama with a service following at 3:00 p.m. The service will be officiated by family friend Pastor Tommy Sanders.
“For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39.
