Gillian L Smith

Gillian Smith, age 74, after a hard fought battle with Parkinson’s Disease for 25 years, passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2022 in Birmingham, Alabama. Gillian was born March 28, 1948 in Isleworth, England to Claude and Irene Dowell.

Gillian was a TWA & British Airways attendant where she met her husband Donald, later becoming a mother and moving to the states. She became an American citizen September 27, 1996 and later received a Master Gardener certificate from The University of Illinois as she had a passion for gardening. She was an incredible quilter & seamstress who loved dogs, painting & spending time with her grandchildren.

Survived by husband Donald R. Smith, daughter Melissa and her husband Scott Howard and her grandchildren Ella and Miles Howard of Hoover, AL, son Weston Smith of Atlanta, GA and her brother Michael and his wife Gilly Dowell of Hatfield Broad Oak, England.

In keeping with Gillian’s wishes there will be no funeral services. There will be a private wake with immediate family to remember and celebrate her life and her remains will be spread at a later date in Illinois and England as she had wished.

In lieu of flowers and funeral services, donations may be made in her honor to The Parkinson’s Association to help spread awareness and research towards a cure.
