Raised in Marianna, Florida, Carol graduated from Florida State University prior to moving to Birmingham. She’s remembered as an adventurous soul, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Married for 53 years, Carol and her husband, Harold, lived a life of adventure. Whether traveling the world or participating in child and grandchild activities, she was always involved and went above and beyond to ensure every group had what they needed for the show to go on. To her grandchildren she was “Honey” and she was always there for a ride, a snack, an encouraging word, and more than a few dollars.
Carol opened the first art store in Alabaster in the mid-70’s and met four precocious, talented, and caring women who became life-long friends that traveled together, raised their children together, and laughed and cried together. These loyal and loving friends, “Magnolia Mamas” became family and include Ruth Brooks (Paul), Brenda Berrey (Bucky), Mary Underhill (Tom), and Ann Cruse.
Beyond family, Carol was a long-time member of the Shelby County Art Association and other art associations and guilds, as well as, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. The friendships she made were a point of pride for her and gave her great joy and memories.
Her love of Jesus Christ, positive attitude, joyful friendships, and her family defined her blessed life. Carol was involved, loyal, and giving in many organizations and events. Her interests were wide and she was always ready for a new experience or adventure. Because of this, the family asks that in lieu of flowers donations should be made to a charity of your choice.
