Angie Cantu, age 71, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away on August 13, 2021. She was born on January 17, 1950 in Vallejo, CA. She was married to the love of her life for 53 beautiful years. Angie, more commonly known to everyone as “Nana”, loved spending time with her family. She was the absolute best tortilla maker, among so many other things. She was the heart and soul of our family. She will be missed more than can be imagined. If you ever got the pleasure of meeting or knowing her, you knew she was someone who spunky, kind, loving and truly selfless. She always put family first, no matter what else she had going on. From picking up her grandkids when we would tell her last minute, to going to any of their extracurricular activities, or calling her to say we were out of tortillas (she would stop what she was doing and make some really quick), we could always count on her no matter what. She was the most beautiful woman inside and out that was ever here on earth. She will be truly missed, but never forgotten.
To be a mother is a calling from God for all women. My Mother was not only a loving wife, but loving mother, and loving Nana (grandmother). Any of these roles are the most important roles of a family and she was able to experience all three. With these roles there is always a heavy burden, something that was rarely seen in her as she was always so strong and a tough fighter. She always instilled trust and security, family bonding, thoughtfulness, sensitivity, positive attitude, guidance, support, kindness, caring, loving and hard work whether it was as a wife, mother, or Nana in good times or hard times, and loved everyone no matter what.
We knew this morning that the Lord was going to call your name. While here on earth we loved you dearly and in heaven we will love you the same. It broke our heart to see you go. You did not go alone as a part of everyone went with you. Today the Lord called you home. You left us beautiful memories and your love will still be our guide. Even though we cannot see you, you will always be by our side. This family chain is broken, and you will be greatly missed, but as the Lord calls us one by one, the chain will be whole again.
She is survived by her husband, Jose Cantu. She is also survived by her three children, Joey Cantu (Nancy), Jennifer Cantu-Nail and David Cantu (Angela); seven grandchildren, Darryl Cantu (Brandi), Jeremy Cantu, Wesley Nail, Rachel Yim (Chi Hoi), Victoria Nail, Logan Cantu, and Caitlin Cantu; two great-grandchildren; and twenty-four brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be Wednesday, August 25, 2021 from 9 am – 11 am with a service to follow from 11 am – 12 am at Southern Heritage Funeral Home, 475 Cahaba Valley Road, Pelham, AL 35124. Burial will follow at Alabama National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in remembrance of Angie may be made to the Red Cross, Jimmie Hale Mission, or charity of your choice.
