She was born May 11, 1928 in Burlington, Washington to August and Cecile (Everett) Wendland. She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Pat Tutwiler, Wini Anderson and Maureen Bushong; one nephew, James Anderson and one great-nephew, Travis Martinez.
Surviving are two nieces, Valerie Bushong of Groveland and Cheryl (Dave) Martinez of South Pekin; one nephew, Scott (Theresa) Bushong of Pekin; five great-nephews, Branden (Lacey) Bushong of South Pekin, Cody (Arielle) Cornwell of East Peoria, Joe (Holly) Martinez of Mackinaw, Beau (Brianna) Bushong of Tennessee and August (Haley) Bushong of San Diego and many great-great-nieces and nephews.
Shirley had worked as an Executive Secretary at Keystone Wire & Steel Co. in Bartonville for 36 years retiring in October of 1982. She later worked at Independent Steelworkers Alliance for six years retiring in April of 1990.
She enjoyed roller skating, swimming, dancing and watching classical and vintage movies. Her greatest joy was loving and caring for her nieces and nephews and their children grow up.
Shirley was a former member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pekin and was also a former member of the National Secretaries Association - Peoria Chapter from 1965 to 1982.
Her graveside will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, October 10, 2024 at Lakeview Cemetery in Pekin. Pastor John Vaughn will officiate.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.
