She was born November 20, 1936 in Pierre, South Dakota to John “Jack” and Florence (Patnoe) Starkjohann. Joyce grew up in Norris, South Dakota and moved to Loveland, Colorado in May of 1955. She was a resident of Denver, Colorado from 1962 to 1968, Ashland, Oregon from 1971 to 1976, Carson City, Nevada from 1976 to 1984, and Loveland, Colorado from 1984 to 2017, when she moved to Pekin.
Joyce graduated from high school in Kadoka, South Dakota in 1954. She graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado with a Bachelor’s of Art degree in 1970 and a Master’s of Art degree in 1971. Joyce worked at various secretarial and administrative assistant positions in Loveland and Denver from 1956 to 1968, including Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District and Ralston Purina Regional / Divisional Sales Offices. After graduating from University of Northern Colorado, Joyce taught at Southern Oregon State College in Ashland, Oregon and Western Nevada Community College in Carson City, Nevada. She then returned to Colorado and started her own business, Word Processing Professionals in Fort Collins, Colorado, which she operated for 14 ½ years.
Joyce is survived by one sister, June (Charlie) Berndt of Pekin; two nieces, Yvonne (Richard) Baird of Simi Valley, California and Ronda (Dennis) Bruns of Windsor, Colorado; six nephews, Greg (Pam) Starkjohann of Middleton, Idaho, Scott (Marty) Starkjohann of Austin, Texas, Chris (Tracey) Starkjohann of San Diego, California, Rev. Matthew (Shana) Berndt of Manito, Michael (Cindy) Berndt of Parker, Colorado, and Brian (Melissa) Berndt of Pekin; sixteen great-nieces and nephews; and several great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Robert Starkjohann, Floyd Starkjohann, and Clifford Starkjohann; one sister, Betty Lou Starkjohann; one nephew, Steven; and two great-nephews, Jack and Benjamin.
Joyce was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. She was a long-time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Loveland, Colorado and was a member of St. John’s (Sand Prairie) Lutheran Church in rural Green Valley.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 23, 2021 at St. John’s (Sand Prairie) Lutheran Church in rural Green Valley. Pastor Chris Sansom, DCE Bill Krueger, and Pastor Matthew Berndt will officiate. Visitation will be from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Thursday at the church. Interment will be at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Fort Collins, Colorado.
