Born December 24, 1931 in Peoria to Karl W. and Florence (Patterson) Spangler, he married Melba Stumph on November 1, 1952 in Pekin. She survives.
Surviving are seven children, Pam (Randy) Morris, John (Carol) Spangler Jr., and Don (Clarice) Spangler, all of Pekin, Deb (Kurt) McBeath of Mapleton, Linda (Bill) Batek of Chillicothe, Tom (Kris) Spangler of Green Valley and Michael (Bev) Spangler of Lakeville, Minnesota; 27 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and one sister, Elizabeth Rodden of Canton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Clay Matthew Spangler and two brothers, Donald W. and Earl N. Spangler.
John had worked at Caterpillar, Inc. in engineering for 37 years, retiring in 1988.
An avid hunter and outdoorsman, John was a tinkerer who was a jack-of-all-trades and master of them all.
John was a strong family patriarch and life coach. He never failed to lend a helping hand.
His memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, March 8, 2021 at First Baptist Church in Pekin. Senior Pastor Vern Risner and Pastor Brad Martin will officiate. Visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the service.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.
