Born April 22, 1934 in Crofton, Kentucky to Semore and Lorine (Bryant) Henderson, he married Bonnie Elizabeth Peak on July 1, 1954. She died December 13, 2018 in Pekin. He was also preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Debra Lynn Garrison; one grandson, Timothy Buchanan; one great-grandson, Noah Landrith; two brothers, James Henderson and Herbert Henderson and his half-sister, Shirley Fitzanko.
Surviving are one daughter, Mary Beth (Roger) Landrith, of Pekin; one son, John Wayne (Donna) Henderson, Jr. of Pekin; eight grandchildren, Heather (Alex) Roberts, Andy Freeman, Christina (Joe) Bignell, Tamie Martin, Adam Landrith, Sr., Amanda Hall, Ryan Henderson and Amy (Brian) Lawson; one brother, Noland (Virginia) Henderson of Pekin; one half-sister, Barb Fitzanko of Pekin and two half-brothers, Harold Fitzanko of Pekin and Andrew “Billy” Fitzanko of Tremont.
John was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the Korean War.
John had worked out of Laborers Local 231 for over 40 years. He previously worked for American Distilling Company in Pekin and operated the Gulf Gas Station on Court Street in Pekin.
He enjoyed fishing, working with his hands making things, cutting grass and riding his motorcycle.
He was a member of Gethsemane Church in Pekin and a former member of San Jose Christian Church.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 28, 2023 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Pastor Nathan Noyes will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Military rites will be provided by the United States Army and Tazewell Military Rites Team. Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.
