Born September 18, 1933 in Pekin to John H. and Mary A. (Long) Buchanan, she married Franklin E. “Bud” Zimmerman on April 19, 1952 in Pekin. He died July 11, 2011 in Peoria. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Kenneth Zimmerman; one sister, Gloria DeWitt; one brother, Johnny Buchanan and two nephews.
Surviving are one daughter, Joyce (Larry) Schoon of North Pekin; one son, Dennis (Debra) Zimmerman of Pekin; her daughter-in-law, Laura Zimmerman of East Peoria; eight grandchildren, Trisha Bush, Bradley (Liz) Zimmerman, Jessica Sanders, Brian (Mollie) Zimmerman, Keith (Alisha) Zimmerman, Bethany Zimmerman, Russell (Jillian) Schoon and Josh (Dawn) Hidden; 21 great-grandchildren; one sister, Janet Jones of Pekin; two brothers, Charles Buchanan of Morton and Jack (Mary) Buchanan of Raymondville, Missouri and numerous nieces and nephews.
Doris had worked at Caterpillar, Inc. in the office in East Peoria for several years. She last worked at J.C. Penney’s in Pekin, both downtown and at the mall in the catalog department for many years before her retirement.
A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Doris was a vigilant prayer warrior and follower of Christ. She loved her children and grandchildren fiercely and unconditionally and was a loving caregiver to her parents and her in laws.
Doris enjoyed crocheting and donated crocheted items to Skilled Nursing Facilities Pekin Cancer Center and her Bible Study group at PFN. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband on different Peoria Charter Bus Trips.
She was a former Cub Scout Leader, when her boys were young and a former member of the Pekin Christian Women’s Club, where she held several offices. She was also former member of the U of I Tazewell County Home Extension and was a Sunday School Teacher for many years at Calvary Baptist Church in Pekin.
Doris was a member of Pekin First Church of the Nazarene.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 26, 2024 at Pekin First Church of the Nazarene. Pastor Brian Eatock will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.
