Darlene was born June 14, 1932 in Peoria to Daniel W. and Dorothy E. (Bohlander) Tromler. She married the love of her life, Harold Newell on June 14, 1948 in Peoria. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Gary Newell; one daughter, Bonnie Penkal; and one sister, Donna Frye.
Surviving are one son, Joseph Newell of Pekin; five grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Darlene founded the Deer Creek Public Library and worked there for 30 years, retiring in 1986.
She was a Girl Scout Leader and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Deer Creek Women’s Club. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, crossword puzzles, cooking and collecting dolls.
A gathering celebrating Darlene’s life will be at a later date.
Her graveside service will be held at Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin at a later date.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.
