On a beautiful Thursday afternoon, May 25, 2017. one of the ‘good ole boys’, Sidney Donald Robinson, entered the gates of Heaven and was welcomed by his parents, Vernie and Louise Robinson and brothers, Charles, Buddy Joe, and Tom. Don passed away with his wife, children, grandchild and his loving dog, Calamity. by his side after a long bout with Parkinson’s Disease, dementia and other health issues.
Don was born in Taylorsville, MS on September 13. 1944 and graduated from Taylorsville High School in 1962. Shortly after graduation. Don moved to Jackson where he dedicated 28 years of his life to Fluorescent Maintenance Co., Inc. He had a chance to live his dream when he became a member of the Jackson Fire Department. Although it was short lived because of a residency ruling, Don enjoyed every moment on the department – said it was a good feeling to be able to help people in their time of need.
Don was also a member of the172nd Military Airlift Group of the Air National Guard where he was awarded a plaque for being the outstanding student in his class in an electronics class at Sheppard AFB, Texas.
Oh, and also Don had the distinguished honor of holding the record for eating over 7,000 waffles at The Waffle House and was Mr. March on the 2009 Waffle House calendar.
Being an accomplished musician was just one of Don’s talents. Although the guitar was his favorite instrument, he could play any instrument and all by ear. He would say if he had to read music, playing would be no fun. Woodworking was a hobby of his as evidenced by the many rocking horses, Adirondack chairs, cabinets and other additions in his home.
On February 14, 1965, Don exchanged wedding vows with Elaine Tallman. They were blessed with 52 years together and the births of their children Shannon McDowell (Chris), Adam Robinson (Dee), and Erin Robinson. Although Don demanded respect from his children, there was no doubt that he loved and cherished each one of them. One Christmas, Don was presented an album handwritten by the children expressing their memories, the values they had learned from him, the respect they had for him, and funny remembrances. After reading it, he said it was the best gift he had ever been given.
Also adding blessings to his life were his grandchildren Sydnee Tapley (TJ), Ashlee Zesati (Steven), Kailey King, Alex Robinson and her mother, Regina Reis, Logan McDowell, Caden King, and Kylie McDowell.
Don is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, sister-in-law, Renee Thomas, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and too many friends to mention.
