She was born June 14, 1951, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Shirley worked for several years in retail with various businesses. With her feisty and outspoken personality she became friends with many of her customers. Shirley really enjoyed Mexican food, especially tacos, chips and salsa. She enjoyed working puzzles and watching tv. Among her favorites were crime drama and animal shows, and her favorite movie was "The Goonies".
Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thomas Hodges; her parents, Alfred E. Smith and Eva Bernice Gaw Smith Spivey; and her sister, Rachel Smith.
Survivors include daughter, Natalie Hodges; grandson, Jayden Furman; and sister, Ann Furman and husband Robert.
As Ann lovingly reflected on her sister's life she commented, "My favorite thing about her was her laugh. Rest in peace, my tiny big sister."
Honoring the request of Miss Hodges, a formal funeral will not be held. The family will have private time after her cremation.
