Dorothy was born on February 21, 1958 in Belzoni, MS to the late Collins Bradford, Jr. and Sarah Lofton Bradford. She was raised by her great grandparents, Robert and Eliza Campbell. Dorothy was the eldest of 16 siblings, three of which preceded her in death.
Dorothy graduated from Humphreys County High School in 1976. After graduating, she attended Jackson State University and would later earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Manhattan Christian College in Kansas. Dorothy was an author, poet, entrepreneur, culinarian, seamstress, encourager and prayer partner. She loved life and she loved her family. Before passing, Dorothy expressed her gratitude for her greatest accomplishments, being a mother and mam’ma. In her passing, she leaves behind six wonderful children– LaShaundrea Bradford of Hattiesburg, MS, Sonya (Rashad) Nelson of Durham, NC, Larry Bradford of Hattiesburg, MS, Shartese (Darrylverin) Weathers of Byram, MS, Donald Ricketts of Hattiesburg, MS, and LaSarah (David) Deshauteurs of Mobile, AL– and 21 brilliant grandchildren whom she loved wholeheartedly.
Here are a few words of encouragement in Dorothy’s own words:
Hold On
The days seem long and the nights so short; barely enough time to prepare for the day. But God cradles us in the palm of His hand to guide our footsteps along the way.
There’s no need to worry or fret because God has never failed us yet. Just continue to fight the battle in faith; and remember, God may be slow, but He’s never late.
– Dorothy Bradford
